THE
BHANGRA GENERATION – DEVELOPMENT (Almost Complete)
THE BHANGRA GENERATION is
a documentary detailing the impact Bhangra music has had on the
second and third generation youngsters in North America. The film
focuses on a number of individuals who have been taken by the music
to pursue creative and recreational/fun avenues that encompasses
the music of their ancestors from the land of the Punjab. While
retaining the traditional lyrics and musical instruments unique
to Bhangra – the new version of the music is a fusion blend
that combines the old world of their parents to their own modern
day setting in the west.
SWEET AMERIKA – PRE-PRODUCTION
SWEET AMERIKA is a tale of immigrant life in America,
which has become unbearable for many following the attacks on September
11, 2001. Amid the tightening of the internal security – the
immigrants, especially those from South Asia and the Middle East
– are forced to suffer daily racist attacks. In many cases
the attacks are misdirected such as in the cases of Sikhs being
mistaken as Muslims. SWEET AMERIKA tells the story of Balbir Singh
Gill aka Bobby, a Sikh grocery store owner who is kidnapped and
tortured by four Americans who mistake him for a Muslim because
he wears a turban.
THE FUSION GENERATION - DEVELOPMENT
THE FUSION GENERATION is a romantic comedy set in the Indo-Canadian
community in Vancouver. It focuses on the lives of second and third
generation Indo-Canadians are part of North America’s urban
fusion generation – people who exist in a unique multicultural
landscape which on one side is dominated by western culture and
the other by their own unique culture.
THE TRAGEDY OF FLIGHT 182 - DOCUMENTARY -
DEVELOPMENT
THE TRAGEDY OF FLIGHT 182 is a very important story for
the Indo-Canadian community. The Air India flight 182 blew off the
coast of Ireland in June 1985 killing 329 people, mostly Indo-Canadians.
Two men were arrested late last year for conspiring to blow up the
plane and they currently await trial in Vancouver. While the police
laid charges more than 15 years after the tragedy - there are many
questions that remain unanswered and probably won't be answered
at the criminal trial slated to begin early next year. Questions
like - was the tragedy preventable? Who was behind it? What role
did the Indian agents on Canadian soil play in the scheme of things.
And why did it take so long to make arrests in the case. These are
all questions that the families of the victims have been asking
the police and politicians. And these are the questions I seek to
investigate in making a documentary account of the tragedy which
continues to haunt victims' families and the Sikh community which
wants closure on this very painful period of their history in Canada.
