The
Synopsis
Immigrant life in America has become unbearable for many following
the attacks on September 11, 2001. Amid the tightening of
the internal security – the immigrants, especially those
from South Asia and the Middle East – are forced to
suffer daily racist attacks. In many cases the attacks are
misdirected such as in the cases of Sikhs being mistaken as
Muslims. SWEET AMERIKA tells the story of Balbir Singh Gill
aka Bobby, a Sikh grocery store owner who is kidnapped and
tortured by four Americans who mistake him for a Muslim because
he wears a turban. The kidnapping is shown in flashbacks –
like Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs (the film’s structure
is a homage to writer/director R. Paul Dhillon’s favourite
American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino). During the film the
viewer is introduced to the various characters who visit or
inhabit the store. There is Issac Washington, a black teenager
who comes to rob the store but ends up working for Bobby after
he kindly gives him the money he needs for his sick mother.
Sagu Kumar and Dara Singh make up the resident comedians of
Bobby’s Spice Emporium. Lovers of food and Bollywood
films – they spend their waking hours at the store doing
the two things they love the most. Mina Sultan is a school-teacher
who supplies Bobby with the most tasty and tantalizing samosas.
Her ulterior motive behind this side job is that she has fallen
for Bobby, even though he doesn’t get it. In this mix
– there is the deadly kidnapping. Will Bobby survive
and will they also kill Issac, who comes to save him. SWEET
AMERIKA takes all these stories and comes up with an entertaining
and enlightening brew that the audience will find completely
satisfying.
